May 2011 - Computer Information Systems Department

  • Terry Morris created and published a mobile app, Basics of Web Design Review, for both the Android and iPhone platforms that students can use to review concepts in the WEB 150 Web Development course. The app is free and available for download:

  • Terry also attended the 2011 Going Mobile in Higher Ed International Online Conference on April 27, 2011.

May 2011 - Accounting Department

  • Dominique Svarc, and three high school accounting instructors from  District 214, co-presented a session on “College Accounting” at the 2011 Teacher’s of Accounting at Two Year Colleges (TACTYC) Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota May 12th-14th.  The presentation focused on the partnership between Harper and Districts 214 and 220. In this program, high school instructors teach the content of ACC101 during the high school year, and bring the students to Harper each May for a proficiency exam. In addition, Dominique participated on a panel discussion titled “iGeneration". 

  • The Accounting Department held its annual High School Accounting Contest on Friday, April 29th. The conference was attended by 105 students from 8 local high schools. Students could compete in two levels, ACCI and ACCII. The top student in each level was awarded a trophy and scholarship for coursework at Harper College.

  • Gary Anderson, Management Department Co-Coordinator, was interviewed by the Chicago Tribune on May 5, 2011, about Harper’s Business Simulation Classes, and the Business Simulation Learning Community.   Chicago Tribune article

  • Robin James – Instructor/Co-Coordinator Management Department and Kathi Nevels - Assistant Professor/Academic Advising and Counseling, have won the Illinois Community College Faculty Association Faculty Grant for 2011.  Title of Grant:  Going Mobile....Creating StudentCentered Career Pathways Using Social Networking.  The teaching and learning workshop will demonstrate for Community College educators how to foster student engagement and address the learning needs of millennial learners through the use of social networking as an instructional tool in a face-to-face course. Both Robin and Kathy will be recognized at the annual ICCFA Excellence in Teaching and Learning Conference and will be required to make a presentation at the ICCFA Annual Conference on October 20 and 21, 2011 in Springfield, IL.

Charles Johnston, Chair for the Psychology Department, has worked closely with the Director of Academic Advising and Counseling to establish the first Partnership with Roosevelt University for a BA in Psychology.

May 2011 - Physical Education Department

Pardess Mitchell collaborated with CIS and ECE faculty members to create a workshop called “Using a Scavenger Hunt to Help Students Learn” through CII.  It was presented on April 27 with Judi Zaplatynsky and Tara Mathien.  Eight faculty participated.

Department of Music Chair, Greg Clemons, has continued his busy spring semester schedule of activities as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician recently with Music in the Parks, a nationally-acclaimed music festival for high school and junior high school musicians.  The 
event took place on three different weekends in May. Music in the Parks performances are associated with Six Flags Great America and Greg served as an adjudicator and clinician for 54 junior and senior high school concert bands, orchestras, and jazz bands from 17 different states and two provinces in Canada. More than 4000 junior and senior high school musicians participated.

May 2011 - Adult Educational Development

On Thursday, May 5, Marlena Rios, Margie Sedano and Jennifer Bell brought four Palatine Opportunity Center morning classes to Harper College for a tour of HVAC, Culinary Arts, Dental Hygiene and ESL. Students got to taste culinary arts' students Cinco de Mayo menu dishes. 
Jose Vital also gave them a tour of the HVAC lab; Juanita Bassler provided them with a presentation to introduce them to college.  For many of the students, this was their first time seeing the main campus of Harper

May 2011 - Department of Academic Success

  • Marianne Farinas de Leon convened and organized the Male Development Summit. There were 62 attendees, including 12 young men from Harper. The all-day workshop presented information on Male Development/Engagement in Higher Ed and included a hands-on portionf or the young male students.  Stephanie Whalen, Judy Kulchawik, and Shante’ Bishop attended the summit.

  • Judy Kulchawik, Shante’ Bishop, Linda Smith, and Marianne Farinas de Leon attended the Understanding College and Career Readiness and Common Core State Standards workshop
