Dan Loprieno, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, was named the NJCAA Midwest Regional "2001 Wrestling Coach of the Year". His Harper wrestling team, which included five NJCAA All-American wrestlers, won the NJCAA Division III 2001 National Championship. In addition, four wrestlers achieved NJCAA Academic All-American status.
Under the guidance of Derek Collis, Instructor of Mathematics, and Dr. Krish Revuluri, adjunct Instructor of Mathematics, the Harper Association of Mathematics (the Math Club) placed first in Illinois and eighth in the nation on the first round of the AMATYC Mathematics Competition.
Linda Nelson, Associate Professor of Adult Education in English, Deepah Godambe, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Derek Collins, Instructor of Mathematics, Thomas DiPalma, Instructor of History, Vera Jareckyj, Instructor of French, Richard Johnson, Assistant Professor of English, and Beata Kania, Instructor of Fashion Design, were selected for inclusion in the sixth edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers, 2000. Nomination to Who's Who is especially gratifying since it comes from a successful former student who makes the recommendation because the educator "made a difference in his or her life."
Gregory Clemons, Director of Bands, adjudicated the 2000 Greater St. Louis Marching Band Festival held in the Trans World Dome and also served as guest conductor for the Palatine Concert Band during the fall concert at Cutting Hall in Palatine, IL.
Jacque Mott, Assistant Professor of Interior Design and Harper Learning Communities Program Coordinator, has been named one of 57 national leaders as a National Learning Communities Fellow by the National Learning Communities Project, sponsored by the Washington Center for Improving the Quality of Undergraduate Education and the Pew Charitable Trusts.
William Schooley, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, and his family received the 2000 Meineke Award for volunteer work at the Spring Valley Nature Center in Schaumburg.
Helen Burroughs, Instructor of Psychology, was recognized by Western Illinois University as a teacher who was named by incoming transfer students as a "most inspirational teacher." WIU President, Donald S. Spencer, said, "WIU is committed to the highest standards of teaching, and we choose to sponsor this recognition program to honor our elementary, secondary and community college partners in this commitment."
John Eliasik, Professor of Physical Education, was recognized as the NJCAA football coach with the most total wins among all NJCAA football coaches. In the 2000 football season, he broke the old record of 204 wins and set the new record of 207 wins.
Diane Batzkall, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Interior Design Department, had a print on exhibit at the Norris Art Center in Geneva, IL. The print was juried into the 2000 Norris Regional Exhibit.
Jeff Pryzybylo, Assistant Professor of Speech, was elected as the Region IV Governor of Phi Rho Pi, the National Honorary Speech and Debate Society. Region IV is Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
Jan Phillips, Associate Professor of Adult Education, is serving as the President of the national organization, The Adult Numeracy Network.
Mercedes McGowen, Associate Professor of Mathematical Sciences, was appointed to the Mathematics Association of America Task Force on The First College Level Mathematics Course, which will coordinate activities with the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. In addition, Dr. McGowen has published four articles in refereed professional journals this past year.
MIchael Brown, Professor of Art, exhibited his stone sculpture in the Navy Pier "Pierwalk 2000" outdoor sculpture show.
Tim Manning, Assistant Professor of Architectural Technology, was a finalist for the Outstanding Educator Member service award of the Northeast Illinois Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Peg Gallagher, Assistant Professor of Nursing, Carole Bomba, Assistant Professor of Nursing, and Laura Crane, Academic Research Coordinator, have published an article reviewing admissions examinations as predictors of success in the nursing program and state board examination in Nurse Educator, May 2001.
Karen Keres, Professor of English, and Virginia Bender, Professor of Computer Information Systems, are recognized in the current edition of Who's Who of America, September, 2000.
Paul Guymon, Assistant Professor of Paralegal Studies, was elected to the position of Administrative Vice President for the Illinois Community College Faculty Association.
Julie Fleenor, Associate Professor of English, wrote "Gender and Pathology in 'The Yellow Wallpaper'," which is included in The Longman Anthology of Short Fiction: Stories and Authors in Context (Ed. Dana Gioia and R.S. Gwynn. New York: Longman, 2001. 1822-1823). In addition, Julie Fleenor was recently appointed to the Illinois Articulation Steering Panel to represent the Illinois Community College Faculty Association Board. She has been a member of that board since 1994. She has also been invited to join the Editorial Advisory Board of the Collegiate English Handbook.
Carl Dittburner, Associate Professor of Architectural Technology, is a finalist for the American Technical Education Association 2000 Outstanding Technical Teacher Award.
Sharon Alter, Professor of History and Political Science, was appointed to a three-year term to the American Political Science Association Education and Professional Development Committee.
